Committee Leadership

Now that the elections are over, we have a clearer picture of House and Senate Committee leadership in the 116th Congress. The House Ways and Means Committee will likely be taken over by Representative Richard Neal (D-MA), who has signaled his intention to make retirement policy a priority. The Education and the Workforce Committee – likely to be renamed the Education and Labor Committee – likely will be headed by Representative Bobby Scott (D-VA). In the Senate, the current chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), is retiring.  Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) recently announced that he would give up his Judiciary Committee chairmanship to take over the Senate Finance Committee chairmanship, a role he has previously held. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) will likely be the chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, the role he currently holds.
