Medical Device Tax Repeal

The House also passed H.R. 184, the Protect Medical Innovation Act of 2018, on July 25. The bill repeals the ACA's 2.3 percent tax on medical devices as of Jan. 1, 2020. The legislation is largely intended to help the re-election chances of Representative Erik Paulsen (R-MN), who has numerous medical device manufacturers in and around his district. This is not the first time Republicans have attempted to repeal the medical device tax. In fact, similar legislation has passed numerous times, but it has always failed to secure the votes necessary for final passage and enactment.
