Nominations

  • Treasury. Steve Mnuchin was confirmed on February 13 as Treasury Secretary in a 53-47 Senate vote.  Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) crossed the aisle to vote in favor of Mr. Mnuchin.
  • OMB. Rep. Rick Mulvaney (R-SC) was confirmed on February 16 as OMB Director in a 51-49 vote. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) voted against Rep. Mulvaney, citing Rep. Mulvaney’s endorsement of the 2013 government shutdown and opposition to military spending as the reason for his opposition. Rep. Mulvaney’s confirmation is important because OMB takes a leading role in both preparing the President’s annual budget and overseeing the promulgation of regulations.
  • DOL. President Trump’s nominee for Labor Secretary, Andrew Puzder, withdrew his name from consideration on February 15 after a series of revelations from his past hobbled his chances of receiving the necessary votes for confirmation. President Trump quickly nominated Alexander Acosta the following day. Currently the dean of Florida International University’s law school, Mr. Acosta has previously served on the National Labor Relations Board, in the Justice Department as an assistant attorney general, and as a U.S. Attorney.  Mr. Acosta has been confirmed three times by the Senate for other positions, suggesting the possibility of a smoother confirmation process than other nominees have faced. The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions has not yet announced a hearing date.
